Gay marriage: good for the economy

TASMANIANS are being urged to count the gains of a gay wedding industry, with the state’s House of Assembly set to become the first Australian chamber to back same-sex marriage.

Lobbyists Australian Marriage Equality pointed to financial benefits for some states in the US when they legalised same-sex marriage, and claimed thousands of couples seeking wedlock would flock to the island state.

”Small business will benefit from the wedding spend of same-sex couples … and Tasmania will benefit from an increase in immigration of the highly skilled creative class,” said the group’s national convener, Alex Greenwich.

The state House of Assembly is today expected to pass a Greens motion supporting marriage equality and calling on the Federal Parliament to amend the Marriage Act.

The bill would still need to pass through the traditionally conservative upper house.
