Georgia’s parliament has ratified an Association Agreement with the European Union amid concerns about negative reactions by Russia, Press TV reports.
Despite political struggles within the parliament, Georgian lawmakers from the opposition and ruling party on Friday unanimously supported the ratification of the deal.
The Association Agreement, signed last month, was approved by the support of 123 lawmakers present at the parliamentary session held in Kutaisi in western Georgia.
Addressing the parliament, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said Georgia should now enter Europe as the country with ancient history and unique culture.
Stefan Fule, the EU commissioner for enlargement and European neighbourhood policy, however, said although this is not an Accession Agreement it could pave the way for future developments between Georgia and the European Union.
“We know that the Association Agreement is not an Accession Agreement, and this is not an accession process. However, the agreement leaves the way open for future progressive developments in European Union-Georgia relations,” Fule told the parliament.
On June 27, the EU signed association agreements with Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova with the aim of deepening political and economic ties with the three former Soviet republics.
Russia warned previously that it may take “protective measures” if the countries approve association agreements with the EU.
Georgian lawmaker Giorgi Kandelaki told Press TV that unlike Ukraine case the Association Agreement does not really alter the trade relationship between Russia and Georgia “because the dependency that was in place in case of Ukraine isn’t really in place in case of Georgia.”
