Congressman says martial law will protect peaceful protestors
FERGUSON, Missouri (INTELLIHUB) — Shockingly, Tuesday, Georgia Rep. John Lewis (D) called for President Obama to impose martial law within the city using executive powers granted.
In fact, according to an article posted Thursday by the Daily Caller:
“People have a right to protest,” Lewis said on MSNBC. “They have a right to dissent. They have a right to march in an orderly, peaceful, non-violent fashion. And the press has a right to cover it. Ferguson, Mo. is not the Congo. It is not China. It is not Russia. We can do better.”
“President Obama should use the authority of his office to declare martial law,” he continued. “Federalize the Missouri National Guard to protect people as they protest.”
However the congressman’s response seems rather odd. Why wouldn’t officials simply remove the police from the situation which they have already botched? If you really think about it, how would declaring martial law and bringing in the military solve anything?
Lewis went on to mention ethical questions concerning the local police department:
[…] a majority-black town in the northern suburbs of St. Louis, has just three black police officers out of the force’s 53 members. “How can you have a city and expect to have peace and order and when there’s very few symbols or representatives of the people making up the public safety department of the city?”, as reported by Newsweek’s Pima Levy.
Some now wonder if Lewis is betraying the people of Ferguson, calming them before the real reinforcements arrive.
