German Chancellor Merkel and Turkish PM Davotoglu Discuss Refugee Pipelines

Christof Lehmann (nsnbc) : German Chancellor Angela Merkel headed for Turkey where she is meeting Prime Minister Ahmed Davotoglu and other Turkish officials for talks about the influx of refugees via Turkey into the European Union. Discussing the root causes for stream of refugees in “the pipeline” is “the great Taboo”.

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s visit to Turkey comes as Ankara positions itself as “facing mounting pressure to open its border to up to 35,000 Syrians who have amassed along the Syrian – Turkish border to flee fighting in Syria.

The Turkish government claims that the influx of refugees is caused by “Syrian government forces onslaught against civilians and the Russian bombings”.

Journalists and Media in Turkey who report about Turkey’s support of and cooperation with Jabhat Al-Nusrah and other Al-Qaeda franchises or  Ankara’s involvement of smuggling stolen Syrian oil are systematically targeted for intimidation, arrests, ransacking of offices, or worse.

Turkey currently hosts some 2.5 million Syrian refugees. Ankara stresses that Turkey “has reached its limit” with regard to its capacity to absorb refugees.

In November, Turkey agreed to fight smuggling and human trafficking networks while the European Union (EU) pledged 3 billion euros ($3.3 billion) to help improve the condition of refugees. Governments and media in EU member States are, however, silent about the fact that the EU, on April 22, 2013, lifted its embargo on the import of Syrian oil, provided that it comes from “rebel-held territories”. The EU has, arguably, helped Turkey “fuel” Islamic State a.k.a. ISIS / ISIL or Daesh and other insurgencies and filled the refugee pipeline.

Merkel’s visit to Ankara comes as her government is facing mounting criticism and protests about the influx of refugees (and migrants) into Germany. The United Nations reports that almost 70,000 refugees have been trafficked from Turkey to Greek islands since January 1, 2016. Merkel noted that the monitoring of borders is not very successful at the EU’s maritime borders. That is, most refugees arrive in the EU by boat or ship via Turkey and Libya. Merkel expressed her hope that stopping the trafficking via the Aegean Sea would also reduce the number of new arrivals in Germany. The German Chancellor is also under pressure to present some results during the EU Summit on February 18 – 19.

It is worth to recall that the former French Foreign Minister Roland Dumas stated that top-British officials approached him in 2009 to ask whether he wanted to participate in overthrowing the Syrian government with help of “rebels”. In July 2013 Dumas appeared in a TV interview with the French TV Channel LPC, saying:

“I am going to tell you something. I was in England two years before the violence in Syria on other business. I met with top British officials, who confessed to me, that they were preparing something in Syria. … This was in Britain not in America. Britain was organizing an invasion of rebels into Syria. They even asked me, although I was no longer Minister of Foreign Affairs, if I would like to participate. Naturally, I refused, I said I am French, that does not interest me. … This operation goes way back. It was prepared, preconceived and planned… in the region it is important to know that this Syrian regime has a very anti-Israeli stance. … Consequently, everything that moves in the region…- and I have this from a former Israeli Prime Minister who told me ´we will try to get on with our neighbors but those who don´t agree with us will be destroyed. It is a type of politics, a view of history, why not after all. But one should  know about it”.

pars_iran_iraq_syria_pipelineIt is also worth recalling that one of the main factors that determined the timing of the war in / against Syria and Iraq was the discovery of the world’s largest known gas field in the Persian Gulf (Arab Gulf) in 2007.

The field is shared by Qatar and Iran. It were primarily the United States, the United Kingdom, Qatar, as well as Israel who dreaded the prospect of a planned pipeline from Iran via Iraq to the Syrian Mediterranean Coast and to Turkey.

The completion of the pipeline would have meant that the EU, for the coming 100 – 110 years could receive about 50% of its energy requirements from Iran and Russia. A prospect that was as unacceptable for the “Atlantic Axis” and Qatar as it was unacceptable for Israel.

Arguably, Chancellor Merkel and Davotoglu could know precisely what has caused the “refugees waiting in the human trafficking pipeline” in Syria and Turkey and how to mitigate the tragic effects of the crisis.
