Today’s television landscape offers an embarrassment of riches, from “Breaking Bad” to “Game of Thrones” to “Orange is the New Black.”
Obviously big TVs are best for consuming all this great content, but not every room can accommodate one, nor can every budget.
If you’re looking for something that’s a decent size and an incredible price, try this: While supplies last, Overrunz.com has the open-box Vizio E291-A1 29-inch LED HDTV for $149.99, plus $15 for shipping. It lists for $239.99 and sells for around that price at most stores. Don’t let the “open box” designation spook you; the TV is still classified as new (by Overrunz, anyway) and comes with a full one-year warranty.
As you might expect, this is a fairly bare-bones model: no smart features or anything like that. It offers 720p resolution, a 60Hz refresh rate, an admirably thin bezel, and built-in SRS StudioSound, which delivers simulated surround for folks who are into that sort of thing. (Vizio promises “immersive surround sound, deep bass, clear dialog and level volume.”)
Interestingly, the panel sits directly on your desk, TV stand, or whatever — there’s a kickstand of sorts at the rear instead of the typical snap-on base. I’m not sure if that’s a pro or con; it’s just a detail I thought I’d mention.
Like most TVs of this size, the E291-A1 comes with two HDMI inputs, plus component/composite and VGA. It also has both digital and analog audio outputs, important if you plan to connect external speakers or headphones. See the full specs at Vizio’s Web site.
CNET hasn’t reviewed this model, but the 500-plus user reviews at Amazon average out to 4.1 stars out of 5. A couple users praised the volume-leveling feature, something I wish all TVs had.
I haven’t purchased anything from Overrunz.com before, so I can’t comment on their inventory levels, shipping speed, or customer service. (If you can, please do so.) But for anyone in the market for a smokin’ deal on a medium-small HDTV, this looks like a winner.
Bonus deal: Laser printers? Awesome. Laser printers with Wi-Fi? Even more awesome. And double-sided printing? Off the charts. While supplies last, Newegg has the Brother HL-2270DW duplexing wireless laser printer for $74.99 shipped. (Amazon has it for the same price.) Read CNET’s review, then grab it before it goes back to its usual $150 price.
