Although a president-elect usually generates good feelings among the citizenry, the 2016 president-elect seems to be surrounded by feelings of gloom and doom. A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll shows that the majority of people responding to a survey expressed negative feelings about Donald Trump’s presidency.
When asked about how Trump will perform during his presidency, 54% of those responding expressed expectation of the worst outcome compared to 45% who expressed expectation of a more positive outcome. Of those expecting the worst, 25% were uncertain about Trump’s performance as president, and 29% were pessimistic and worried about it. Of those expecting a positive outcome, an optimistic and confident view was held by 22%, and 23% held a satisfied and hopeful view.
One of the researchers who conducted the survey said, “Usually elections settle arguments and the nation comes together, at least in the short term. Today, hard feelings persist on both sides of the partisan divide. It’s as if the 2016 campaign has never ended.”
Half of the voters polled indicated they approved of the way Trump is handling his transition compared to 42% who indicated they disapproved. Most of that approval, 92%, came from Trump voters, compared to only 12% of Clinton voters who approved. As it relates to favorability, more respondents (46%) gave Trump a poor rating than a positive one (40%).
These results indicate that Trump may make history as the first president-elect to take office with a negative approval rating.
