A scruffy look just won’t do for pups seeking to find permanent homes, which is why Mark Imhof has been giving shelter dogs free haircuts for the past four months.

Metro reports that the groomer has already donated 50 free trims to homeless canines in New York City, and the makeovers have reportedly been doing wonders to help the dogs get adopted.

Imhof, who owns “The Dog Guy” pet services, says his volunteer work is helping the dogs win back some of their self-respect.

And, judging from the ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos (below), the pups certainly are happy to be receiving the attention.

Some of the dogs are received by shelters in such poor condition, their matted fur interferes with their senses. If they don’t have trouble seeing from droopy bangs, they might have a tough time smelling.

But with reclaimed senses, their personas shift dramatically. Imhof notices that the dogs act differently almost as soon as they receive a cut, which can do wonders to help them get adopted.

Mark actually quit his job as a certified public account last November to start his pet services business. Since then, he’s been providing free trims for a passel of pooches at Animal Care Centers of New York City, reports The Good News Network.

Nearly every shelter pup that has received a trim has been received into a new home.

“I come home uplifted every day,” said Imhof. “I develop a bond with the animals which is just amazing.”
