Members of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) organized the demonstrations.
Around 100 protesters took to the streets outside the Social Security building and Hill Air Force Base’s south gate in Philadelphia and chanted “Hey…Congress do you work today.”
The workers also carried banners reading “We want to work.”
“You’re not getting your job done while I’m working for free – that’s why you see this rally,” chief steward at AFGE Bob North said.
“If you’re non-essential then you’re sent home,” he explained. “If you’re essential, your leave is suspended, you’re not allowed to request leave, and you are required to work a full day and may or may not be paid.”
The government began a partial shutdown on Tuesday as the Republican-led House of Representatives and the Democratic-led Senate did not agree on an emergency spending bill to fund the government.
The two chambers have blamed each other for more than a week over President Barack Obama’s healthcare law.
Over 700,000 federal employees face unpaid leave with no guarantee of back pay when the deadlock is over while other estimates say upwards of 1 million workers face unpaid leave.
Analysts believe that the poor and average Americans are going to be hit the hardest. The worse could be coming on October 17 as a looming debt ceiling may see the US default on its debt.
