AUSTRALIA’S Governor-General Quentin Bryce has had her term extended until 2014.

Governors-general usually undertake five-year terms. Ms Bryce was appointed in September 2008.

But on Wednesday Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced Ms Bryce, a former Queensland Governor, will now serve in the role until March 2014.

“The Governor-General has carried out her duties with distinction,” Ms Gillard said in a statement.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott also welcomed the announcement.

“The Governor-General has maintained a busy schedule here and overseas and has helped hundreds of thousands of Australians and thousands of organisations better appreciate their role in our national life,” Mr Abbott said.

During her term, Ms Bryce has delivered 668 speeches, attended 1029 separate events throughout Australia, attended 606 separate events overseas, presented 647 honours at 38 investitures – including two presentations of the Victoria Cross – and hosted 564 official functions.
