The leaders of Canada and Greece, Justin Trudeau and Kyriakos Mitsotakis, participated on Sunday in an online event to mark the 200th anniversary of the Greek War of Independence.

“The Greek community in Canada is a pillar of society,” said Trudeau, adding that the presence of Mitsotakis at the event was “a testament to the ties and common values that have brought our two countries together for generations.”

“Canadians of Greek descent are enriching our culture, our entrepreneurship, but also our innovation, science and of course our arts. This community has strengthened our ties with Greece, which will allow us to work together to build a better future for all,” he added.

Trudeau said that in discussions he had with the Greek PM he realized that the two governments had similar positions on a number of issues. He named gender equality, recognizing the diversity that is very important, tackling climate change, and creating an inclusive economy.

“These are the issues that are of the greatest importance,” the Canadian PM noted.

Greece invites Canada to invest

On his part, Mitsotakis said that Greece wants Canada to “participate in the success story of the country.

“Greece has not only a glorious past, but also a very promising future. We have left behind the years of crisis. This is a country that exudes a new sense of self-confidence”, he noted.

“We want Canadians, and especially Canadians of Greek origin, to participate in the success story of Greece”, stressed Mitsotakis, adding that: “I am absolutely convinced that with the end of the pandemic, the Greek economy will grow significantly above average.”

He noted that many Canadian companies, including the mining giants Eldorado Gold, will be “part of this success story.

“We have very significant Canadian investments in Greece and I would urge more Canadian companies to see Greece as an investment opportunity. This could be the beginning of a very constructive cooperation on the economic front as well,” Mitsotakis said.
