Greek neo-Nazi leader to stand trial

A court in the capital, Athens, made the decision after Nikos Mihaloliakos appeared before investigating magistrates in a hearing that lasted into the early hours of Thursday.

The court accused Michaloliakos of “running a criminal organization.”

Mihaloliakos, 56, faces charges including involvement in murder, assault and money-laundering.

He is one of six lawmakers arrested over the weekend amid anger at the murder of anti-fascist left-wing musician Pavlos Fyssas on September 18.

The 34-year-old was stabbed to death by a member of Golden Dawn in Keratsini, western Athens. Golden Dawn supporter George Roupakias was arrested in connection with Fyssas’ murder.

On Wednesday, four of the arrested far-right party lawmakers were charged with links to a criminal organization. Three of them were conditionally freed while a fourth lawmaker was held in custody.

Meanwhile, justice officials emphasized that the conditional release did not mean acquittal.

Greek Deputy Prime Minister Evangelos Venizelos has said, “My recommendation to everyone is not to rush. We do not have any conclusive judicial ruling (yet).”

Golden Dawn entered the parliament in 2012 and has been accused of committing several attacks on migrants and political opponents, such as destroying the market stalls of several immigrant merchants.
