A group of 500 Greek anti-government demonstrators has set fire to a tollbooth on an Athens motorway to protest against a hike in tolls, police say.
Greek authorities said the incident took place on Sunday on a highway east of the capital, as protesters voiced their opposition to an increase in the tolls.
The demonstrators also blocked the road, set fire to tires and chanted anti-government slogans.
The protesters were angered by the government’s recent announcement of an increase in tolls by nearly three times from 0.55 euros (USD 0.74) to 1.45 euros (USD 1.97).
Greek motorists say they are already paying a high price for roads, which are not always maintained properly.
The government’s announcement came on February 7 with Transport Minister Mihalis Chryssohoidis saying that the increase in tolls was part of a contract signed with the motorway operators in 2007. He also said the average tolls were among the lowest in Europe.
Greece is experiencing its sixth year of recession as the government has enforced deep cutbacks and tax hikes at the order of its international lenders, leaving an enormous impact on the Greek economy and society.
One in every four Greek workers is currently unemployed, banks are in a shaky position, and pensions and salaries have been slashed by about 40 percent.
Greek youths have also been badly affected, and more than half of them are unemployed.
The long-drawn-out eurozone debt crisis, which began in Greece in late 2009, and reached Italy, Spain, and France in 2011, is viewed as a threat not only to Europe but also to many of the world’s other developed economies.
