Group Publishing is one of the most popular publishers for Vacation Bible School (VBS) materials. This year they are offering three VBS kits. Kingdom Rock:Where Kids Stand Strong for God is their five day contemporary curriculum. Athens: Paul’s Dangerous Journey is their five day Bible times curriculum, and HayDay:Growing in Friendship with God is their three day contemporary curriculum.

Kingdom Rock has a castle theme, which seems like it would appeal to both older and younger kids, knights and princesses alike. The scriptures for each day include four Old Testament selections and one New Testament selection. Group also offers a Roman Catholic version of its Kingdom Rock program.

Each year Group Publishing offers a Bible times VBS, which is a good choice if you have an intergenerational VBS program. This year the location is Athens and the focus is on the apostle Paul and his missionary journeys. Participants will enter an interactive Bible-times city and meet Paul.

HayDay has a farm theme and focuses on one simple point rather than five different ones. The point for this year is that Jesus will always love us. It uses two New Testament scriptures.

  • • The ultimate starter kit retails for $165.99 and includes most of what you need although, as with most of the kits, you’ll need to order student books and other extras. And Kingdom Rock has tons of extras to add on – anything from a pattern to create a Chadder the Chipmunk costume to a castle fabric wall hanging to metal Bible buddies tags to give to the kids that even have a downloadable app available. But the extras can really add up quickly so watch your budget!• There’s a separate preschool program and a science activity center, although you need to buy extra props to do most of the science activities. There are great decorating ideas and a mission project you can use. The leader books and other printed materials are attractive and colorful.• The curriculum encourages putting the kids in mixed age groups.• There are reproducible letters and publicity materials as well as a recruiting and training DVD.• They offer a free online tool, VBS P.R.O. which helps you create your own VBS website.• There are sample of the crafts included in the Super Starter Kit.• The snacks are fun and not too unhealthy, but there seems to be only one option for each day.• There are three game options for each day and they relate well to the lessons.• There’s even information about incorporating a photographer into your VBS program and creating a slide show for your closing ceremony.• There’s a DVD with animated stories with Chadder and a music DVD.
