Gwinnett Police Officer Indicted For Reckless Driving and Homicide by Vehicle After Teen Killed in Crash

The former Gwinnett police officer who accidentally hit two teenagers with his patrol car in January — killing one — was indicted by a grand jury Wednesday.

Scott York has been indicted on three charges, including reckless driving, exceeding maximum speed limits and homicide by vehicle.

A previous investigation found the former Gwinnett officer was driving 97 mph when he lost control of his car and hit Jose Coreas-Mejia, 16, and Jose Melendez-Coreas, 18, on Singleton Road in Norcross on Jan. 29.

York told investigators he was driving to another pedestrian accident when he hit the two boys, who were cousins. Gwinnett County Police Department policy mandates that officers driving to a “personal injury traffic accident” may use their lights and sirens, but may not drive faster than the posted speed limit.

Singleton Road’s speed limit is 40 mph.

York told investigators he tried to pass a car in his way when he lost control and crossed over the center turn lane and both westbound travel lanes before crashing up onto the right curb.

That’s where he hit Coreas-Mejia and Melendez-Coreas. York and Melendez-Coreas suffered relatively minor injuries, but Coreas-Mejias was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center with critical injuries.

He died Feb. 6.

York was fired Jan. 31 after an internal investigation by the department. He’d been an officer for less than a year.
