Hackers could have full access to everything on the phones of WhatsApp users

This was possible through a security issue disclosed by WhatsApp itself (https://www.whatsapp.com/security/advisories/2022/) last week. All a hacker had to do to control your phone was send you a malicious video or start a video call with you on WhatsApp.

You are probably thinking “Yeah, but if I updated WhatsApp to the latest version, I am safe, right”?

Not really.

A WhatsApp security issue exactly like this one was discovered in 2018 (https://www.cnbc.com/2018/10/10/whatsapp-bug-let-hackers-hijack-accounts-with-a-video-call-reports.html), then another in 2019 (https://www.ft.com/content/4da1117e-756c-11e9-be7d-6d846537acab) and yet another one in 2020 (https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/gadgets-news/whatsapp-reveals-six-security-issues-that-could-have-got-its-users-hacked/articleshow/77925426.cms) (tap each year’s link to see the corresponding vulnerability). And yes, in 2017 (https://telegra.ph/whatsapp-backdoor-01-16) before that. Prior to 2016, WhatsApp didn’t have encryption at all.

Every year, we learn about some issue in WhatsApp that puts everything on their users’ devices at risk. Which means it’s almost certain that a new security flaw already exists there. Such issues are hardly incidental – they are planted backdoors. If one backdoor is discovered and has to be removed, another one is added (read the post “Why WhatsApp will never be secure (https://telegra.ph/Why-WhatsApp-Will-Never-Be-Secure-05-15)” to understand why).

It doesn’t matter if you are the richest person on earth – if you have WhatsApp installed on your phone, all your data from every app on your device is accessible, as Jeff Bezos found out in 2020 (https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2020/jan/21/amazon-boss-jeff-bezoss-phone-hacked-by-saudi-crown-prince). That’s why I deleted WhatsApp from my devices years ago. Having it installed creates a door to get into your phone.

I’m not pushing people to switch to Telegram. With 700M+ active users and 2M+ daily signups, Telegram doesn’t need additional promotion. You can use any messaging app you like, but do stay away from WhatsApp – it has now been a surveillance tool for 13 years.

In the last hours, some harsh criticism of the founder of Telegram against WhatsApp was known. Through a publication in his messaging service, the businessman charged against the Meta platform and criticized his security measures. According to his acid analysis, the failures of the application in this matter are not the product of an error, but of the system’s own design.

During the last few years, WhatsApp achieved a huge expansion and got a bigger and bigger user base. So much so that it is currently considered the leading messaging service in much of the world.

Despite its marked presence in the sector, logically, it has competitors with a great position in the market. The most recognized case is that of Telegram, which although it is still behind in terms of popularity , already has a considerable user base. In this context, the battle between the two to prevail is becoming more and more powerful and the promoter of this platform decided to bring out one of the weakest points of its rival: security.

What the founder of Telegram said about WhatsApp

A few weeks ago, WhatsApp revealed the correction of a security flaw that could infect the mobile device through a video or video call . To prevent this entry of ‘malware’ to the cell phone, the recommendation was to install the latest version of the ‘app’, in which this problem has already been solved.

Anyway, over the years, there have been some similar drawbacks of the application and this is what the leader of Telegram pointed out.

Russian businessman Pavel Durov issued a harsh message against the Meta platform. First of all, he launched that “hackers could have full access to the cell phone information of WhatsApp users.” Then, he remembered the aforementioned security flaw whereby only through a video file or a video call, the virus could be infiltrated.

Along the same lines, he questioned the official version that users are protected by updating the app. “A WhatsApp security problem exactly like this was discovered in 2018, another in 2019 and another in 2020. And yes, another one in 2017. In 2016, WhatsApp didn’t even have encryption,” sentenced a fragment of the harsh publication.

Regarding the analysis of these vulnerabilities, Durov questioned whether they are contingencies. According to his description, these failures are part of the design of the system: “They are planted back doors. If a back door is discovered and needs to be removed, another is added.”

On the other hand, he stressed that no user is exempt from security flaws, even if it is the “richest person on Earth.” And he finished: “That’s why I deleted WhatsApp from my device years ago. Having it installed creates a doorway for them to get into your phone.”

Finally, he emphasized that, by pointing out these vulnerabilities, he is not looking for publicity, since due to its popularity, the service does not need it. And he closed: “You can use any messaging application you like, but stay away from WhatsApp.”
