Almost 1600 comments later, however the little critter’s identity was revealed, and he’s not even from New Jersey! His photograph from behind, crawling along a fence originally appeared May 8 on the Facebook page of the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. Turned around and facing the camera, a hairless squirrel replete with a pecan in his mouth demonstrates how easily we can be mistaken when identifying strange animals.

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation explained:
” Without fur, every muscle and wrinkle as well as the true length of a squirrel’s tail is more obvious, changing our perception of what we’re seeing. In both photos, the most telling attributes are the signature ears and the head of a fox squirrel as well as the way the animal postures itself…and the pecan in its mouth is giveaway, also!”
For those readers who remember “Sex and the City” and Carrie Bradshaw’s statement after being scared by a squirrel on her country weekend adventure, might this really be true?
“You can’t be friends with a squirrel! A squirrel is just a rat with a cuter outfit.”
