Haters Gonna Hate: Trump Taps His Inner Taylor Swift for Speech at Christian College

Over the weekend, Donald Trump spoke at Liberty University, the evangelical college founded by Jerry Falwell.

Chanting “USA! USA!” and wearing red baseball caps that read “Make America Great Again”, the supporters of Trump among the crowd gave a standing ovation as Trump made his way to the podium.

After commenting on the “YUGE” crowd of about 50,000 that attended his commencement speech and bragging about his stance among evangelical voters, Trump told the crowd of devout Christians that when no one agrees with you – just do it.

Trump read directly from his teleprompter without deviation: “Nothing worth doing ever, ever, ever came easy. Following your convictions means you must be willing to face criticism from those who lack the same courage to do what is right — and they know what is right — but they don’t have the courage or the guts or the stamina to take it and to do it. It’s called the road less traveled.”

He continued on, asking questions about “our brief time right here on Earth” and urging students to take risks against “established systems” just like he did. Trump said they should strive to be an “outsider” and ignore the haters.

Trump said: “No one has ever achieved anything significant without a chorus of critics standing on the sidelines explaining why it can’t be done. Nothing is easier — or more pathetic — than being a critic, because they’re people that can’t get the job done.”

In 2016, an estimated 14% of evangelical Christians supported Trump’s candidacy for president, despite his views and lifestyle being inconsistent with their religious tenants.

Earlier this month Trump signed an executive order that made Christians happier in their deeply held religious belief that they have a god-given right to discriminate.

The order follows a bill that provides legal cover for businesses and individuals who believe it is their “god given right” to refuse service to members of the LGBTQ community based on passages in their religious texts.

According to leaked documents, the order makes provisions for protected individuals, “any organization, including closely held for-profit corporations” who have religious beliefs that have refused to employ, contract or provide benefits to persons with whom they personally disagree with; such as gays and lesbians.

Another move Trump made in benefit of evangelicals is their commitment to ignore radical Christian terrorism in this country.

The Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) program was created to identify lone wolf attackers and a variety of groups that promote domestic terrorism; including specifically radical Christian terrorists.

CVE has a history of collaborating with social media giants such as Google and Facebook; as well as communities and educational programs designed to promote counter-radicalization campaigns. The groups highlighted by the CVE were Christian extremists and white supremacists, but now CVE will only target Islamic radicalization – ignoring the big problem America has with radicalized Christians.

America has had a long-standing problem with Christian extremists committing acts of terrorism, and murdering US citizens that now will go ignored by the Trump administration.

The Kansas anti-Muslim right-wing militia group called “The Crusaders” is a prime example of the widespread problem in the US with radical Christian terrorists.

According to court documents, The Crusaders were caught plotting to “detonate truck bombs at an apartment complex where 120 Somali immigrants live” in Garden City, Kansas. Another scheme cooked up by the fringe group involved blowing up a Mosque and even an attack after Election Day.

In its possession, the radical Christian terrorist group had on hand “an arsenal of firearms, ammunition, bomb-making materials” stashed away.

The Crusaders are just another group in a lengthening list of fringe “second amendment people” who hold to their deeply held Christian beliefs so much so that they have become a “substantial danger” to the public.

The New America Foundation (NAF) published a report in 2015 showing just how deadly and dangerous radical Christian terrorists can be.

The data showed that Americans killed domestically in Islamic related “jihadist attacks” totaled 26; however the number of US citizens murdered in “right-wing attacks” nearly doubled.

The study explained that law enforcement agencies reported concerns about right-wing groups 74% of the time; as compared to reporting Islamic extremists only 39% of the time.

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC): “Increasingly frightening numbers, cells of angry men in the United States preparing for combat with the U.S. government. They are usually heavily armed, blinded by an intractable hatred, often motivated by religious zeal.”

These mostly “white, right-wing Americans, nearly all with an obsessive attachment to guns, who may represent a greater danger to the lives of American civilians than international terrorists.”
