Britain’s highest ranking soldier has paid a moral-boosting visit to troops in Afghanistan in time for Christmas.

General Sir Peter Wall flew in to Camp Bastion in the volatile Helmand Province to thank servicemen – who will be spending the holiday thousands of miles from their homes and loved ones – for their professionalism and commitment.

Addressing some of the 9,500 British military personnel based in the province, General Wall said: ‘It is tough and one of the things about the military is that you don’t get to decide where you spent Christmas yourself.

‘We’re extremely conscious that we make very big demands on our soldiers, sailors and airmen – and marines.

‘We depend on the support that they receive from their families in order to make sure that we can prosecute our operation out here alongside our Afghan partners.’

According to the Telegraph, troops at the camp will be looking forward to a traditional Christmas dinner served up in the heat of the desert later today, and will also be given extra time to make phonecalls home.

But with the war ongoing, many soldiers will still be on duty during the festive holiday.

‘It is a hardship but we have very good arrangements for keeping in touch and fantastic support from the people back home,’ Taskforce Helmand spokesman Lt Col Gordon MacKenzie said.

This is the second high-profile visitor to Afghanistan this week. On Tuesday Prime Minister David Cameron met up with RAF pilots in Kandahar.

British troops are expected to start pulling out of Afghanistan next year.

Merry Christmas to all our brave young men and women on the front line – my 21 year old son included. We’re thinking of you all today and everyday. XXX

Why are our troops there again?

– tim, sw, 25/12/2011 01:04=====If you look carefully, you will see that the General has been a paratrooper – he’s also been a leader at platoon, company, regiment, brigade, division and probably corps level befofre taking up his current appointment. He’s a General! There isn’t a post for him in Afghanistan, he’s in charge of the whole army!

Give thanks for them. A great sacrifice of some of our best has been made for the people of Afghanistan. Come on DC its now time to bring them all home.
