Health secy. rapped for kids A&E visit

UK Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has come under increasing fire after he admitted taking his children to the  accident and emergency unit of a hospital  as he “didn’t want to wait” to see a GP.

Shadow health secretary Andy Burnham slammed Hunt for what he called “apparent contradiction” of official Government advice.

NHS advises people to go to walk-in centers, minor injuries units and NHS 111 before A&E if the situation is not an immediate emergency or if an illness is non-life-threatening, Burnham added.

Meanwhile, a British university professor slammed the health secretary’s move as “a shameless behavior.”

“Well, I think it is the most extraordinary piece of shameless behavior to actually advise the public, ask the public not to look to the accident and emergency as a way of avoiding the queue for the general practitioner. He knows that there are general practitioners, there are pharmacies, there are walk in centers, all kind of centers. But he, being a very important person, in his own mind, his advice didn’t apply to him, in the sense of entitlement, the rules are for other people not for them,” Jonathan Rosenhead told Press TV on Wednesday.

“The health service is in crisis and what is the response of the health secretary? Nothing. Get more funding for help but to take his children to shortcut,” the London-based political commentator noted.

The controversial admission by the UK health secretary come as health service is facing a cash crisis with some experts warning that the NHS is running out of money.

Official figures indicate that hospitals spent a record amount — almost £1 billion — on agency staff in six months, while missing targets on A&E, cancer and routine operations. Experts believe NHS is in desperate need of an immediate £2 billion extra to make ends meet.
