Hebrew mother tongue of Israeli minority

Figures released by Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics show that Hebrew is the mother tongue of only 49 percent of Israelis aged above 20.

Twenty-seven percent of Israelis find it difficult to use Hebrew in daily discourses, the center reveals.

Hebrew is not the mother tongue of 51 percent of Israelis older than 20. Arabic is the mother tongue of 18 percent of Israeli adults; 15 percent have been born to Russian parents; for two percent Yiddish is their mother tongue and two percent prefer speaking in French.

Two percent of Israelis, who are born in English-speaking families, readily switch to English when faced with difficulty speaking Hebrew.

About 39 percent of Russian immigrants speak very poor Hebrew with an incomprehensible accent. Forty-eight percent of Russian-born Israelis speak Russian at home, and 38 percent keep a circle of Russian-only friends.

Russians account for more than 1.5 million of the non-Arab Israelis. They mostly immigrated to Israel in search of a better lifestyle.

However, many have chosen Israel as an intermediary destination and usually apply for citizenship to countries like Canada, Germany and the US and emigrate from Israel.

Figures also indicate that more than 50 percent of elderly citizens have problems reading and replying to official letters from the municipality and other organizations.

The failure to encourage Hebrew among Israelis has worried many Israeli politicians, who criticize Israeli youths for failing to observe Hebrew grammar rules while speaking.
