The leader of Israel’s Labor Party Isaac Herzog said on Saturday that he might replace incumbent prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu in case early general elections were held in Israel.
“I think it is now clear that I am Netanyahu’s substitute,” Herzog said in an interview with Israel’s Channel 10.
He said he believed that he would form the next Israeli government, noting that he would head to the president and form the government if he got support from Israel’s centrist parties.
He said early general elections would most likely be held in Israel.
While Netanyahu ruled out the possibility of holding early elections, some of Israel’s analysts believe that the chance for holding these elections was there.
Herzog called repeatedly over the past few weeks on some of Netanyahu’s government coalition members, including Finance Minister Yair Lapid and Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, to walk out of the coalition and join a new coalition in preparation for forming a new government.
On Saturday, Herzog reiterated the same call.
“Let us join hands to offer a true alternative in the elections,” he added in the interview with the Israeli channel.
Israel held its general elections last time early last year. According to Israeli laws, the elections should be held every four years, if a decision was not taken for holding early elections.
