A mother whose eyes were gouged out by her partner said today he had ‘robbed me of one of the most precious things in life’.

Shane Jenkin, 33, subjected 32-year-old mother-of-two Tina Nash to a sickening 12-hour attack at her home in Hayle, Cornwall, leaving the attractive blonde completely blind.

Surgeons removed one eye and failed to save the sight in the other, after Ms Nash was suffocated and had her jaw and nose broken during the ‘vicious’ assault, Truro Crown Court heard.

She faced the cameras for the first time today since the vile attack, after attending a hearing last year hiding behind large, dark sunglasses.

In a statement released after Jenkin admitted GBH with intent in court this morning, Ms Nash said she was glad he had ‘at least taken responsibility for changing my life forever’.

She said: ‘I truly feel that, when he was strangling me, he was trying to murder me.

‘He has taken everything from me and robbed me of one of the most precious things in life – my sight.

‘I miss the things which people take for granted the most such as seeing the sky and the sea.’

Powerfully-built Jenkin, of Hayle, Cornwall, was originally charged with attempted murder but court staff confirmed he had admitted GBH at the court today. He will be sentenced next month.

Ms Nash, who had bravely faced Jenkin in court at a previous hearing, added that she had been left feeling ‘buried alive, claustrophobic and not in control of my life’ by the assault.

‘I actually look forward to going to sleep because in my dreams I have sight. It’s when I wake up that the truth hits home,’ she said.

‘Some days I just don’t want to get up but I’m determined to provide a future for my children and this is my motivation.’

Her sons were aged 13 and three at the time of the assault.

Sobbing as she spoke out on BBC News, Ms Nash said: ‘I feel like a ghost. i can hear everyone around me, but I can’t even see my own hand in front of my face.’

She said her children’s faces were what she missed the most, adding that were it not for them, she would ‘rather not be here like this.’

The 31-year-old confessed that her confidence had gone since she has no idea what she looks like following the attack.

‘This isn’t me,’ she added. ‘I miss the world, I just miss everything.’

She said that Jenkin had shouted at her that the attack was her own fault, as she lay bleeding on the floor of her home.

Despite losing her sight in both eyes, she will need further surgery to try and repair her damaged eye socket, after weeks spent in hospital at the time.

Ms Nash was discharged from hospital shortly before her 31st birthday last year and began re-learning how to DJ without her sight.

Relatives of Ms Nash said they were ‘shocked’ at what had happened to the ‘friendly’ and ‘outgoing’ young woman.

There had been earlier incidents in which an abusive Jenkin had been violent towards Ms Nash, but she had stood by him and even helped him to get out of jail.

The scarred woman warned other victims of domestic violence to ‘get out before it was too late’, saying she had thought she could change her partner, but that he had only got worse.

Detective Inspector Chris Strickland, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said Jenkin carried out a ‘premeditated, sustained and vicious attack on a defenceless woman’.

‘Our view is that Jenkin deliberately strangled Tina into a state of unconsciousness in order that he could inflict these terrible injuries,’ he said.

‘Tina’s life will never be the same and her lifelong disability will be a constant reminder of the attack.

‘Her injuries were so shocking that friends who saw her soon after the incident found it difficult to stay in the room.

‘Tina has displayed incredible strength however and has shown great desire to be able to care for her two children despite not being able to see them as they grow up.

‘We would publicly like to thank the members of the public from Penzance and Hayle who helped us locate Jenkin when he fled following the attack. Their help was invaluable to our inquiry.’

Ms Nash’s friends and family have been fundraising for her in the west Cornwall area.

Her friend Lisa Nicholls, from Penzance, said: ‘Tina can’t thank everyone enough for their goodwill and all their messages. She is so overwhelmed.

‘She keeps saying ‘it’s only me, it’s only Tina.’

I feel sorry for his parents, must be awful giving birth to a monster.

He’ll just get the usual slap on the wrist that will turn into half a slap with time off – the justice system is out of kilter with the decent people in this country.

I wouldn’t build any hope of this excuse for a man being giving a sentence befitting his crime and, as we haven’t any decent deterrents crime will just keep escalating. But I do wonder if a similar crime was perpetuated against a person in the upper echelons of society exactly what punishment would be metered out!

Words fail me but this evil man should get life for what he has done.

This guy is total scum. He should be put away for a long long time and furthermore, someone, everyone needs to tell her she is beautiful. She deserves happiness and the joy of a decent relationship.

Very sad story, and such a brave women, but the British justice system will let him out in 3 year Max, for good behaviour less. My heart goes out to her, and family.

Typical wimpish British justice. Why the hell was the attempted murder charge dropped? He will get some pathetic few years in prison and bet out. God, I hate the British justice system, it does absolutely nothing to protect the victims and everything to aid an offender.

She is right, next to life it is probably the most ”precious” thing…So perhaps the same should be done to him..I am sure plenty would volunteer to provide the service(including myself) but of course the ”Human Rights’;’ wimps would be up in arms.

Wicked man. PLEASE let him be given a sentence that truly reflects the severity of his evil crime. Poor Tina – take comfort from the fact that many people feel for you.

Horrific. Lets see how the British courts deal with this …Punishment should fit the crime and victims should have a say in that. No doubt he will be sentenced to a week with no tv… Bit like the other story of the most evil man being in an OPEN prison before his prison guard took him home for riding lessons.
