“What is happening in Qusayr in Homs is Hezbollah declaring a war…,” George Sabra said on Monday in a press conference in Istanbul. “Hezbollah fighters have crossed the border into Syrian towns and cities.”
The accusation was made by Sabra shortly after he was appointed interim president of the so-called Syrian National Coalition (SNC). He was named the Syrian opposition’s new caretaker chief after the resignation of Ahmed Moaz al-Khatib.
Sabra was referring to Hezbollah’s alleged role in fighting in the Syrian governorate of Homs near the Lebanese border.
A senior Hezbollah leader said the resistance movement has been protecting the Lebanese living in Syrian border villages.
The movement’s executive council Sheikh Nabil Qauk said that it is Hezbollah’s moral and national duty to help the Lebanese citizens defend themselves against militants in Syria.
“What Hezbollah is doing with regard to this issue is a national and moral duty in the defense of the Lebanese in border villages,” Qauk said.
“To those who ask us to allow our brothers in these border villages to be victims of murders, kidnaps, massacres and expulsions, I respond to you: ‘Can we leave these Lebanese hostage to this situation?” he added.
“Hezbollah’s martyrs are the martyrs of the entire nation because they are defending their Lebanese compatriots,” Qauk said.
The Syria crisis began in March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of soldiers and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.
The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.
In an interview recently broadcast on Turkish television, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said that if the militants take power in Syria they could destabilize the entire Middle Eastern region for decades.
“If the unrest in Syria leads to the partitioning of the country, or if the terrorist forces take control… the situation will inevitably spill over into neighboring countries and create a domino effect throughout the Middle East and beyond,” he added.
