A horse and its female rider got that sinking feeling on a beach near Geelong on Sunday afternoon.
The going was particularly heavy on Avalon Beach and the pair became stuck in a gluey mixture of sand and mud.
A CFA crew went to the rescue and tried to dig the horse out, working feverishly against both the rising tide and temperature.
Eventually, a tractor and an equine sling arrived from Werribee Zoo and the unhappy nag was freed after two hours.
A vet cleared it and the rider was taken to Werribee hospital for a check-up.
