An Israel Defense Forces soldier was lightly injured by shrapnel during an overnight exchange of fire between Egyptian troops and drug smugglers near the border, the army said in a statement.
The soldier was in a vehicle that was in the area during an anti-smuggling operation, and was injured as a result of stray fire, the army said.
The soldier was taken to the hospital for medical treatment.
The Israeli-Egyptian border sees regular criminal activity, despite a reinforced steel fence along the border that Israel completed in December 2013.
