IKEA hit with food scandal

The Czech State Veterinary Administration said on Monday that horsemeat was found in one-kilogram packs of frozen meatballs made in Sweden and shipped to the Czech Republic for sale in IKEA stores there, The Associated Press reported.

The agency added that a total of 760 kilograms of the meatballs were stopped from reaching the shelves.

IKEA announced that it was stopping sales “of the concerned batch” of meatballs in Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, France, Britain, Portugal, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Greece, Cyprus and Ireland.

“We are now initiating further tests on the same production batch in which the Czech Republic authorities found indications of horsemeat,” IKEA said in a statement. It added results were expected in the coming days.

“We do not tolerate any other ingredients than the ones stipulated in our recipes or specifications, secured through set standards, certifications and product analysis by accredited laboratories,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, Czech officials announced on Monday that they found horsemeat in beef burgers imported from Poland during random tests of food products.

Spanish authorities also said that traces of horsemeat were found in a beef cannelloni product of the Swiss-based food company Nestle.

More than a dozen nations have detected horsemeat in processed products after began their own DNA testing of products labeled beef, and have been forced to withdraw tens of millions of products from store shelves.
