India places curfew over Kashmir killing

Segments of Indian-controlled Kashmir have been placed under curfew after government forces shot and killed a young man during a pro-independence protest.

Thousands of police and paramilitary soldiers maintained the curfew in certain parts of Kashmir including neighborhoods in old quarters of Srinagar on Thursday, while general strikes continued in other areas of the disputed Himalayan region.

Government forces began patrolling neighborhoods, ordering residents to stay indoors.

Shops and businesses remained closed in some areas as pro-independence activists and leaders have pushed for a general strike to protest the killings on Wednesday.

One protester was killed and two others critically wounded after security forces opened fire to disperse stone-throwing demonstrators on Wednesday.

Tensions remain elevated in Indian-controlled Kashmir as the country undergoes a general election over several weeks.

Pro-independence activists in Kashmir say holding the vote in the region is aimed at deceiving the international community regarding the Kashmir dispute and denying Kashmiris the right to self-rule. They are protesting what they call the Indian occupation of Kashmir.

Kashmir lies at the heart of more than 66 years of hostility between India and Pakistan. Both neighbors claim the region in full but have partial control over it.

Many Kashmiris have been killed in an uprising and a subsequent Indian military crackdown since 1989.
