India’s government accused of false intelligence warning over Sir Salman Rushdie

The anti-corruption campaigner Swami Agnivesh has now called for an inquiry
into the government’s conduct. “We should all rise up against this
policy of appeasement of extremism. The government by its spineless actions
and its suspected cheating has brought shame upon India. The whole world is
talking about it,” he said.

Festival organisers, including the leading British author William Dalrymple,
have also been criticised for preventing fellow authors from reading out
sections of The Satanic Verses in protest. Two authors were told to stop the
reading midway through their protest.

Publisher S Anand said the festival had been a “tragedy and farce”.
Their actions also appeared to have upset Sir Salman Rushdie too, who asked
William Dalrymple and festival producer Sanjoy Roy to explain their actions
in a message on Twitter: “Willie, Sanjoy: why did this happen?” he
said.

Mr Dalrymple said he had been told it was an offence in India to read from a
banned book and that had his colleagues not stopped the protest the festival
could have been halted.
