A huge volcanic eruption in Indonesia’s main island of Java has forced thousands of people to flee their homes and closed three international airports.
The alert status for Mount Kelud, which is regarded as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in Java, was raised late Thursday just hours before the eruption began.
Authorities have announced a 10-kilometer (six-mile) exclusion zone around the volcano in East Java Province with National disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho saying that some 200,000 people from 36 villages within the zone had been urged to evacuate.
“A rain of ash, sand and rocks is reaching up to 15 kilometers (nine miles)” from the volcano’s crater, he said.
Transport Ministry director general of aviation Herry Bakti said that international airports in the Javanese cities of Surabaya, Yogyakarta and Solo were shut down temporarily.
Booms from the mountain could be heard 130 kilometers (80 miles) away in Surabaya and even further away in Jogyakarta.
The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation said there was little chance of another eruption as strong as that of the Thursday night. However, tremors around the volcano could still be felt Friday.
The 1,731-meter Mount Kelud has killed over 15,000 people since 1500 as it is one of some 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia.
The country is susceptible to volcanic eruptions and earthquakes because it sits on the so-called Ring of Fire – a series of fault lines stretching from the Western Hemisphere through Japan and Southeast Asia.
Earlier this month, at least 16 people were killed in Mount Sinabung eruption on western Sumatra Island.
