Jokowi was welcomed by Robert A Borja, Protocol Head of the Philippines Foreign Affairs Ministry, and was met by Johny J Lumintang, Indonesian Ambassador to the Philippines. Emmanuel Pinol, Philippine Agriculture Minister, Maria Lumen B Isleta, Philippine Ambassador to Indonesia, and Antonio Calixto, Pasay City Mayor, also welcomed Jokowi and his wife.

Friday afternoon President Jokowi and his entourage visited the Malacanang Palace to meet with Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte. Jokowi inaugurated a new shipping line connecting eastern Indonesian waters with the southern Philippines territory of Davao. “I am happy to announce the opening of a new sailing route that would connect Davao to General Santos and Bitung waters”, said Jokowi.

Meeting President Duterte, the two conducted a meeting on various sectors including maritime cooperation. The previous shipping line between Indonesia and Philippines took six weeks for one trip to be completed because the goods had to transit through Jakarta. The eastern waters of Indonesia directly border with the southern Philippines territory. The opening of the new line will cut the shipping time to 2.5 days. The new shipping line will also cut the transportation cost by up to 70 percent. Jokowi added that “It is a bilateral economic cooperation to enhance the trade value of the two countries that would increase to 32%.”

Jokowi also noted that cooperation in security sector will also be intensified to exterminate terrorism and pirates in the area. Drug trafficking as well as the mobility of and interactions between regional and international insurgent groups are a grave concern for both countries even though their interests and their perceptions of “security” have not always been compatible. In the evening, Jokowi and his wife attended a state dinner at the Malacanang Palace.
