ABU DHABI — The United Arab Emirates has become concerned by the proliferation of miniature unmanned aerial vehicles.
Officials acknowledged that UAE residents were flying mini-UAVs with sophisticated surveillance payloads.
The officials said the platforms were being used to spy on everybody from closed sites to neighbors.
“Their use will be regulated to protect the privacy of the people,” UAE Interior Undersecretary Lt. Gen. Saif Al Shafar said.
The mini-UAVs, most of them rotary-wing platforms, could be purchased for as little as $65. The aircraft often contain high-definition cameras and have been seen over numerous communities.
“If I am sitting in my garden with my family and see such planes above our heads I immediately take them into the house as I’m afraid the plane’s owner might take images of us and post them on social networks,” Saeed Al
Habshi, an Al Ain resident, told the Abu Dhabi-based Gulf News.
The UAE, which produces larger unmanned platforms, does not restrict the
sale of mini-UAVs. The platforms are sold both in chain stores as well as
online.
For his part, Al Shafar said the sale and use of mini-UAVs could require
regulation. The undersecretary said residents who were being tracked by the
aircraft could complain to police.
