A Polish man on Interpol’s ‘most wanted’ list has been arrested by Wiltshire police during a raid at a Subway restaurant just yards from the local police station.

Murder suspect Piotr Kupiec, 28, was arrested after police detectives tracked him down to a sandwich shop, where he had been working for a few years.

Kupiec was captured and cuffed in front of bewildered regulars while working in an unassuming branch of SUBWAY in Devizes, Wiltshire, just yards from a police station.

He was wanted by international police and was on Interpol’s most wanted list which contains 330 suspects.

Kupiec, an alleged member of a feared Polish gang, is wanted by police in his home country over allegations of murder, assault and theft.

Detectives in the rural market town were tipped off to the international arrest warrant – and found the man right under their noses.

The sandwich chain is on the same road as Wiltshire Police’s headquarters, and officers would have had to stroll just 270 yards to bring him in.

While there he would likely have spoken with unknowing officers and police workers while assembling their sandwiches.

Kupiec is thought to have lived in Devizes under cover for as long as four years, and was a well-liked member of staff at the eatery.

But, unbeknownst to his shocked colleagues, Kupiec was wanted in connection with gang activity in Kraków and had been fleeing authorities since 2008.

According to local media reports, Kupiec was hunted by Polish police in the wake of a clash between rival gangs after a football match.

Officers in Poland had been hunting him since a 2007 match between Korona Kielce FC and Legia Warsaw FC.

Fights broke out after the game between rival supporter groups, leading to injuries and even a death.

He was wanted on suspicion of murder and attempted murder by the prosecutor’s office, but disappeared shortly afterwards.

Kupiec was one of around 330 suspects on the most-wanted list maintained by Interpol.

A description states that he was born in 1987 and is wanted for “injury causing death/manslaughter/murder” as well as “assault/maltreatement” and theft.

Reports in Krakow claim Kupiec was part of a gang that has since been busted by a police operation codenamed called Infra-Red.

Kupiec – who showed up more than 1,000 miles from Poland – is one of several suspects thought to have fled abroad.

It is understood that he had worked at Subway for some time and was also a member of a local gym.

A female employee at Route 2 Fitness sports club in Devizes, Wiltshire, said: “We didn’t really know him. None of us knew him very well.

“He wasn’t in very often. He wasn’t a regular person. He would come in sometimes early in the mornings. He didn’t speak very much.

“He looks pretty much exactly the same as he does in the photos.”

He has now been taken into custody after officers executed an arrest warrant on behalf of Interpol.

Wiltshire Police confirmed they arrested a Polish man in a raid at 7.50pm on January 13, 2016. They said he is now being dealt with by Interpol.

A spokesman said: “Officers attended Subway, in London Road, Devizes, and arrested a 28-year-old Polish man in connection with an investigation into a murder in Poland.

“He is in custody and is being dealt with by Interpol.”

Police accidentally arrested the wrong Piotr Kupiec in London last July.

He was the same age as the suspected killer, but was let go after they realised the two had different dates of birth.
