Iran, UNEP sign environmental joint plan of action

Iran and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) have signed a joint plan of action on managing hazardous wastes and promoting collaborative researches.

The document was signed by Vice President and Head of Iran’s Department of the Environment, Massoumeh Ebtekar, and the UNEP Executive Director, Achim Steiner, in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi on Friday on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-2).

According to the joint plan of action, the two sides would hold regional and technical workshops, set up a regional data center, exchange information and conduct joint research on e-waste.

During their meeting, Ebtekar and Steiner also exchanged views on the latest environment issues in the Gaza Strip and the Caspian Sea.

The UNEP chief paid a visit to Iran on April 23-24 and took part in the 2nd International Seminar on Environment, Culture and Religion that was co-hosted by UNEP, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Iran’s Department of the Environment. He also delivered a lecture at the University of Tehran.
