Awake Goy Addressing worshippers in Tehran on Friday, Ayatollah Movahedi Kermani highlighted the importance of the 12th presidential election due to be held on May 19 and said, “In a sense, a difficult mountain pass is before us.”
He further called on the people to understand the sensitivity of the election, saying the high turnout in the polls will prove that Iran’s establishment is enjoying “strong public support”.
In relevant remarks earlier on Wednesday, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei warned against the enemies’ attempts to damage the process of election by publishing tempting stories in their media outlets.
The Leader further emphasized that the Iranian nation would foil such plots with the same vigilance it has shown in the past.
The election should be held with high turnout and in healthy and secure conditions, Ayatollah Khamenei noted.
On Thursday night, Iran’s Interior Ministry released the final list of candidates, who were approved by the Guardian Council (GC) to run in May’s presidential election.
According to a statement released by the Interior Ministry, the list includes incumbent President Hassan Rouhani, First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri, Seyed Ebrahim Raisi, the chief custodian of the Holy Shrine of Imam Reza (AS) in the northeastern city of Mashhad, Tehran Mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Mostafa Aqa-Mirsalim and Mostafa Hashemitaba.
The final candidates would have 27 days for electoral campaigns, before the election day on May 19.
The number of eligible voters in the upcoming election is estimated to be around 1.5 million higher than the 50.5 million in the previous round four years ago.
