Iranian FM’s special assistant reviews regional developments in Geneva

March 8 –The Iran Project – Hossein Jaberi Ansari, a senior assistant to Iran’s foreign minister in political affairs arrived in Geneva, Switzerland, on Monday (March 5) to discuss the latest developments in Syria Peace Talks.

While in Swiss, he held talks with UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura as well as the heads of Russian and Turkish delegations in Geneva.

The Iranian diplomat reviewed the latest developments in Syria Peace Talks with Russia’s Sergei Vershinin and Turkey’s Sedat Önal.

During the bilateral, trilateral, and quadrilateral meetings, the parties focused on the process of restoring peace and tranquility to Syria, and exchanged views on the results of the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi as well as the forthcoming Astana Talks on Syria which is going to be held at the ministerial level between the three guarantor states.

The Iranian, Turkish, and Russian delegations and the UN special envoy for Syria further agreed that these quadrilateral talks continue to follow up on the outcome of the Astana Talks and the approvals of the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi so as to consolidate the constructive link between the Astana and Geneva negotiations.

Before his trip to Switzerland, Ansari spent some time in Syria and held meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Talking to Jaberi Ansari, Syrian President said that permanent coordination between Syria and friendly countries is essential under current sensitive situation in the region.

Turkey’s aggression once again proved that reliance on Turkish policies and statesmen is impossible, the Syrian president stated.

Jaberi-Ansari, for his part, said that Islamic Republic is keen on coordination and consultation with Syria in all fields.

“Any Iran’s help in finding a diplomatic solution to the Syrian crisis is with the approval of Damascus leaders,” he said, noting that Syria and its nation have special status before the Iranian government and nation.

Jaberi-Ansari had already visited Syria in early summer and mid-winter.

In the previous meetings, Syrian president and the Iranian top negotiator talked about the most recent political and field developments, the prospect of solving the Syrian crisis, especially in the framework of Astana and Geneva talks.
