Iranian, Russian envoys discuss Syria

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Ambassador to Moscow Mehdi Sanayee and Russian President’s Special Envoy to the Middle East and Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov conferred on the latest developments in Syria.

During the meeting in Moscow on Tuesday afternoon, Bogdanov underlined the necessity for continued political efforts to settle the crisis in Syria as well as talks between the Syrian government and the opposition along with fight against the terrorist groups.

He also said that presence of foreign forces in Syria should either be based on the international laws or the legitimate and ruling government’s demand.

Sanayee, for his part, referred to the complicated regional situation, specially in Syria, and said, “Consultations between the two countries should increase.”

He also blasted attempts by certain regional states and opposition groups to weaken the recent Syrian-Syrian talks in Geneva.

The meeting came as the International Syria Support Group convened in Vienna on Tuesday which was also attended by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

Upon arrival in Vienna on Monday night, Zarif reiterated his country’s opposition to the military solution of the Syrian problem, and said blocking the terrorists’ use of truce to recruit more forces should be the result of the International Syria Support Group meeting in Vienna.

“Despite attempts by the terrorist groups and their regional and global supporters, the crisis in Syria has no military solution and the International Syria Support Group meeting is an opportunity to emphasize the necessity for complete respect for the ceasefire,” Zarif told reporters.

He warned of the danger posed by terrorism to Syria, the region and the entire world, and said, “Confrontation against these terrorist groups is necessary and we shouldn’t allow them to use the truce to intensify the terrorist acts against the Syrian people.”

Zarif described the Vienna talks as a good opportunity, and said Iran has always underscored the need to settle the crisis in Syria through political talks.
