Iranian wrestlers enjoy golden night in Paris

Competing on Sunday evening in the French capital, Iran’s Hassan Rahimi, Seyed Ahmad Mohammadi, Alireza Karimi and Komeil Ghasemi all hammered their rivals in the finals clinching gold medals.

Hassan Rahimi (61kg) won against Quentin Jean-René Sticker of France 12-2 in the first round. In the same weight category, Iran’s second representative Iman Sadeghi also downed Mongolian Khash-Erdene Byambadorj 12-2. Rahimi and Sadeghi face each other in the second round Rahimi won over his teammate reaching to semifinals.

He won the Giorgi Revazishvili 8-0 to reach to final round where he subdued the Georgian Shota Phartenadze winning the title.

Iranian Iman Sadeghi also competing in 61kg was led to the repechage round where he overwhelmed the French wrestler 12-2 while he failed in the attempt to win the bronze medal conceding a 5-15 defeat against Giorgi Revazishvili of Georgia.

Seyed Ahmad Mohammadi (70kg) crushed Finish Matias Juhani Savola 10-0 in the first round and breezed past Hungarian Balazs Kalman with the same result finding his way to semifinals where he defeated Azamat Nurykau of Belorussia in road to final. In a tough final encounter, Mohammadi got the better of Georgian Avtandil Kentchadze 9-7 snatching the gold medal.

In the first round of 86kg attended by 15 athletes, Alireza Karimi won a victory over Adam Abdulvakhabov of Russia by technical fall 10-0 before he downed Georgian Irakli Mtsituri by technical fall 11-0 on road to the semifinals where in turn he defeated Belorussian Aliaksandr Hushtyn by technical fall 12-1. The Hungarian athlete Istvan Vereb was brought to his knees by Iran’s Karimi who clinched another gold medal for the Iranian outfit.

Komeil Ghasemi (125) was victorious against the winner of World Championship bronze medalist Tervel Ivaylov Dlagnev of USA 3-2 and similarly prevailed over Georgian Zuriko Urtashvili by 6-0. He further won Hungarian Daniel Ligeti 11-2 in semifinals before he overcame Luis Felipe Vivenes Urbaneja of Venezuela in final round bagging the gold medal.

On the first day of the tournament, Reza Atri (57kg), Hassan Yazdani (74kg) and Abbas Tahan had snatch gold, silver, bronze medals, respectively.

The 2016 Paris international wrestling tournament began on January 29, and finished on January 31 while tens of sportsmen and women from different countries competed in the international tournament.
