Iran’s nuclear chief rejects ‘Incorrect’ reports on uranium contract with Kazakhstan

Tasnim – The head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) rejected as “incorrect” recent reports by some British media over the role of Kazakhstan and the new US administration in the suspension of a contract to export uranium to the Islamic Republic.

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Ali Akbar Salehi said the US government has already announced that it is agreed to the contract, according to which Kazakhstan would export 950 tons of uranium to Iran.

He further rejected the claims that Kazakhstan’s national company, Kazatomprom, is opposed to the agreements.

Salehi said Iran secured a contract with Kazakhstan in accordance with agreements with the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, US, Britain, France, and Germany) on regulations to purchase uranium (from Kazakhstan) but the British government disrupted the progress of the contract “at the last moment”.

The Britain-based ‘New Europe’ newspaper, in a recent report, claimed that Kazakhstan has suspended uranium exports to Iran because of the new US government’s anti-Iran policies.

Kazatomprom and the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran have signed a contract for the supply of 950 tons of yellowcake.

Under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1, Tehran is allowed to use heavy water in its modified Arak nuclear reactor but should sell any excess supply of both heavy water and enriched uranium on the international market.

The JCPOA also authorizes Iran to purchase natural uranium or yellowcake in return.
