When seven-year-old Chloe Dennis’ mother went into labour, she didn’t call the midwife… she did the job herself.

The youngster was awoken by mother Rachael’s screams as contractions began in the middle of the night.

With nobody else around, she leapt into action and grabbed a towel to keep her newborn sister clean and warm.

She then comforted Rachael throughout
the birth, packed some bags for the trip to hospital and called her
grandmother to tell her the good news.

Rachel, who does not live with her
boyfriend, had begun pacing around her home when she started getting
labour pains late at night, while Chloe slept.

She said: ‘I was in the bathroom when my waters broke and then felt an urge to push.

‘I shouted for Chloe to come and help me. And she was fantastic.

‘Chloe has been so helpful.’

Chloe sprang into action. She wrapped her newborn sister, who weighed 7lbs 8ozs in a blanket, phoned her grandma and packed an overnight bag for herself to stay at her uncle’s house.

Chloe said: ‘When I heard mummy shouting I thought she didn’t feel very well and was frightened of something.

‘I was a bit scared at first but when I got up I saw my baby sister. I held her and wrapped her in a blanket.

‘I’m happy I was the first person to see her and she looked small and cute.

‘I got some blankets and I called my nanny to let her know mum had had the baby.

‘I also helped the ambulance men get things and let them in.’

Rachael was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham, where she was checked over and kept in overnight, but was discharged the following day.

Chloe’s Year 3 teacher Caroline Ashworth at Gomer Junior School, Gosport, said she is especially helpful and grown up for a seven year old.

She said: ‘Chloe’s such a responsible and helpful little girl in the classroom.

‘I’m very proud she coped so well in the situation.’
