Armed militia men led by Ammon Bundy, the son of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, have taken over a federal building in Oregon in an anti-government “call to arms”.

These heavily armed Christians have seized the headquarters building of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, located 300 miles southeast of Portland, Oregon.

Ammon told the local press that his armed gang of white men plan “on staying here for years”. They have not made this decision “at the last minute” but are fully prepared to never surrender.

On his Facebook page, Ammon posted a recruitment video, asking for more militia to help. Ammon said: “This is not a time to stand down. It’s a time to stand up and come to Harney County.”

These militia men decided to take over federal property and occupy governmental land after 300 protesters, militia, and local citizens paraded through the local town of Burns to speak out against the jailing of 2 Harney County ranchers who went to prison.

Ranchers Dwight Hammond Jr. and Steven Hammond claim they lit fires in 2001 and 2006 to reduce the growth of invasive plants and protect their property from wildfires; however this land is public property and the father/son team were convicted of arson and served time.

Steven served 3 months and his son Dwight served 1 year incarcerated.

The presiding judge decided the Hammonds had not served enough jail time and ordered them back to prison for another 4 years each.

And while the Hammonds planned to go back to jail quietly, far-right militia groups and conspiracy theorists took up this cause as proof that the federal government is going after ranchers, just as they claimed as the case in Nevada at the Bundy Ranch.

So what began as a protest to repudiate the government’s authority over the Hammonds, quickly turned into a siege at the refuge headquarters. And as Ammon perceives it: “The people have been abused long enough.”

Ammon and his armed gang of right-wing militia feel they “are in a situation where if we do not do something, if we do not take a hard stand, we’ll be in a position where we’ll be no longer able to do so.”

Dave Ward, sheriff of Harney County, warned residents to keep a distance from the building because “a collective effort from multiple agencies is currently working on a solution. For the time being please stay away from that area. More information will be provided as it becomes available. Please maintain a peaceful and united front and allow us to work through this situation

The chatter on Twitter using the hashtag #OregonUnderAttack is not all supportive of this cause. Many people on social media recognize that these are armed protesters who are also white men and asked why this instance is not seen as domestic terrorism.
