Dear Editor,
Re: Egypt Shows How Political Islam is at Odds With Democracy
Youssef Rakha asks, “When has an Islamist government, however democratically elected, ever ceded power to non-Islamists through a functional political process?” It would be good for him to provide examples of an “Islamist government” which has ever been allowed to operate within a “functional political process”. Algeria’s election was cancelled by the military when the Islamists looked like winning and the Hamas government in Palestine faced an immediate comprehensive blockade. We might well ask when has a “functioning political process” ever ceded power to Islamists? Although Morsi’s government in Egypt is the first which has been in a position to act like a normal government, closer scrutiny reveals the underhanded way that the remnants of the Mubarak regime firmly entrenched in Egypt’s institutions deliberately blocked and hindered Morsi’s efforts to govern. The artificial fuel crisis and vicious media campaign are just two examples which Rakha has ignored, let alone foreign interference.
