Israeli FM storms Al-Ibrahimi Mosque

World Bulletin / News Desk

Ismael Halaweh, the head of al-Khalil’s religious endowment office, has said  “The incursion was limited to the side of the mosque that is under Israeli control and lasted for about a half hour,”

“During the incursion, the gates separating the mosque from the Palestinian market of the Old City were sealed, amid strong presence from Israeli security forces. Lieberman is trying to use Al-Ibrahimi Mosque incursion as a campaign ploy two days before the parliamentary elections.” Halaweh said.

Israel’s parliamentary polls are scheduled to take place on Tuesday.

The Palestinian official denounced the incursion and stressed that the mosque is “entirely Islamic and that Jews have no claim to it whatsoever.”

During the incursion on the flashpoint site, an Israeli TV channel quoted Lieberman as saying that “the Lieberman-led right-wing Yisrael Beiteinu party is part and parcel of the Nationalist Camp,” in reference the Israeli right.

Lieberman added that among the main demands of his party is “eliminating the Hamas movement and pledging to not disengage from the West Bank the same we withdrew from Gaza.”

Yisrael Beiteinu is expected to be among the top losers of the upcoming elections, as polls indicate it will receive five seats compared to 13 in the past Knesset.

Lieberman had earlier said that he expects his party to garner 11 seats.

Last year, a series of corruption scandals involving Yisrael Beiteinu bigwigs delivered a considerable blow to the party’s popularity, which was reflected in recent opinion polls.
