Israeli officials call for punitive measures against Arab MK

Israeli Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan called on the Knesset Ethics Committee to take appropriate punitive measures against Arab Knesset Member (MK) Ahmed Al-Tibi.

Israeli TV Channel 2 reported that Erdan filed a petition to the Ethics Committee against Al-Tibi for his visit to Al-Aqsa Mosque, claiming this is a violation of an Israeli government decision that bans MKs from doing so.

Israeli newspaper Jerusalem Post, which obtained a copy of the petition, reported that Erdan wrote that Al-Tibi’s visit to Al-Aqsa Mosque, “disturbed the public’s peace and endangered its security and could have incited and agitated others to commit acts of violence in response”.

He added: “That was done in total violation of the good of the country to which MKs are committed by virtue of their position.”

The Israeli minister, Jerusalem Post said, pointed out that in 2015 the Knesset Ethics Committee declared that visiting Al-Aqsa is an ethical violation, reinforcing an order from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Al-Tibi said: “Al-Aqsa is a mosque and I am a Muslim. This is my house and I will enter it whenever I want, not whenever the [Israeli] police or the PM wants. I will continue doing this.”

He stressed that the behaviour of the Israeli police was “unacceptable” when they opened fire on Arab civilians.

The policemen, Tibi insisted, who killed Arabs must be prosecuted instead of calling for taking measures against an elected official with parliamentarian impunity.
