‘It looks a lot like perjury’: Tucker Carlson accuses Dr Fauci of lying to the Senate after emails reveal he feared Wuhan scientists were doing gain of function research – but he told lawmakers they weren’t

  • The Fox News host says a trove of emails from the country’s top disease expert indicates he lied about chances that the virus could be manmade
  • Some emails appear to indicate knowledge of government-funded collaboration with a Chinese lab in Wuhan of research into coronavirus transmission
  • A senior virologist shared an article in another email suggesting the virus could be a bioweapon from a website that social media companies later banned
  • Carlson says Fauci said early on that the virus came from bats, a stance which was supported by government-funded coronavirus research in Wuhan
  • Some redactions in the emails, he said, suggest Fauci could be under investigation
  • Other emails suggested misleading statements were made about the efficacy of post-infection immunity and mask wearing

Fox News Host Tucker Carlson on Wednesday accused Dr. Anthony Fauci of perjury, saying that a trove of the expert’s emails released earlier in the day suggested he had lied to the Senate about the Wuhan lab’s coronavirus research.

Carlson said the emails also suggested Fauci made misleading statements about the efficacy of post-infection immunity and mask wearing.

‘We’re Americans, he said. ‘So we assumed the man in charge of protecting the US from COVID must be rational and impressive.

‘We also assumed he must be honest, but we were wrong. It soon became clear that Tony Fauci was just another sleazy federal bureaucrat, deeply political and often dishonest.

‘More shocking than that, we then learned that Fauci himself was implicated in the very pandemic he’d been charged with fighting.’

Carlson’s comments came after a trove of 3,200 of Fauci’s emails from January to June 2020 were obtained and published by Buzzfeed.

They showed leading virus experts warning Fauci that COVID-19 may have been created in a lab while he publicly played such claims down.

Fauci, who serves as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases under the umbrella of the NIH, has denied that the NIH directly funded gain-of-function research in Wuhan while answering questions in Congress. Fox News Host Tucker Carlson said a trove of emails released Wednesday from Dr. Anthony Fauci suggested the nation's top disease expert had lied about research into the origins of the coronavirus, and accused him of perjury.

Fox News Host Tucker Carlson said a trove of emails released Wednesday from Dr. Anthony Fauci suggested the nation’s top disease expert had lied about research into the origins of the coronavirus, and accused him of perjury.

The host’s dissection of the emails began with ones Fauci sent early in the pandemic expressing worry that people might believe the virus had emerged from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, a Chinese lab in the province the disease is believed to have come from.

The worry, Carlson said, was likely based around US government-funded research done in collaboration with the lab.

On Jan. 1 2020, shortly after the first cases of the virus were detected, Dr. Kristian Anderson, an immunologist at the Scripps Research Institute emailed Fauci saying that some features of the virus could potentially be man made.

Shortly after, Fauci sent an urgent email to a deputy of his, Hugh Auchincloss, asking him to review a document he was attaching, which was titled ‘baric, shi et al nature medicine SARS gain of function.’ Carlson went so far as to say Fauci had tried to cover up suggestions that the virus could have been manmade, as well as the nature of US government funded research into the disease in Wuhan, the Chinese province where the virus emerged from

Although the contents of the attachment are unknown, the title, Carlson said, was likely a reference to Dr. Ralph Baric a US-based virologist, who had performed US government-funded research in collaboration with Wuhan Institute scientist Dr. Shi Zhengli, who specializes in coronavirus transmission in bats.

Gain of function research involves altering diseases to increase their transmissibility.

Carlson says Fauci’s denials about gain of function research in his comments to congress amounted to perjury.

‘In retrospect that looks a lot like perjury,’ the host said.

‘We do know that starting early last year, a lot of people at NIH were worried that COVID had not occurred naturally — that it had instead been manipulated in a lab in China – and yet they seemed determined to hide that fact from the public.’

In other emails from early in the pandemic, British medical researcher Dr. Jeremy Farrar, who was involved in early top secret conference calls discussing the virus, shared an article from the website ZeroHedge suggesting that the virus could be a bioweapon. British medical expert Dr. Jeremy Farrar, who was in early international discussions about the coronavirus shared an article from a website suggesting the virus was a bioweapon. Social media networks would later ban the sharing of articles from that site

Carlson said that conclusion seemed more likely than the early reports saying the virus may have emerged from Chinese pangolins.

Articles shared from ZeroHendge were later banned on major social media networks, which the host said was after pressure from figures like Fauci who said the virus couldn’t be manmade.

‘Tony Fauci assured the tech monopolies that the coronavirus could not have been manmade,’ he said, ‘and so the tech monopolies shut down the topic.’

On April 17, 2020 Fauci announced that it was believed the virus had emerged from bats in China, which Carlson contends the disease expert could not have known definitively that early in the pandemic.

‘At that point, he could not have known that,’ he said. ‘That was dishonest.’

In an email sent two days after the announcement, Dr. Peter Daszak, a virologist who was doing US government-funded coronavirus research in Wuhan, thanked Fauci for: ‘publicly standing up and stating that the scientific evidence supports a natural origin for Covid 19 from a bat-to-human spillover.’Carlson said the emails suggested Dr. Peter Daszak, a virologist who was doing government-funded coronavirus research in Wuhan, could be under criminal investigation

Much of the rest of the email, however, was redacted under a Freedom of Information Act section that blocks the release of records that could interfere with law enforcement proceedings.

Carlson suggested it could suggest an investigation into the two’s dealings.

‘Are Peter Dazak and Tony Fauci under criminal investigation? We can only hope they are. They certainly deserve it’

Other emails between oncologist Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, and Fauci, Carlson said, suggested that Fauci has made misleading comments about the efficacy of coronavirus immunity after one has recovered from virus.

In a March 4, 2020 email responding to an inquiry from Emanuel concerning the matter, Fauci wrote that there’s, ‘No evidence in this regard but you would assume that their would be substantial immunity post infection.’

‘Studies now show that it’s true,’ Carlson said. ‘In fact, studies now show it is true. People who have had Covid and recovered almost never get sick again from Covid. So they don’t need to be vaccinated.’

He noted, however, that the disease expert has yet to confirm how safe one is from infection after recovering from the virus.

Other emails with Emanuel early in the pandemic, Carlson said have Fauci cast doubt on the efficacy of mask wearing, which the doctor has repeatedly urged in public since then.

Drawing from the email’s conclusion the masks, Carlson said, ‘are in short, a form of make belief he had once again, well, under oath in public Tony Fauci claimed precisely the opposite.’

‘He told me it wasn’t gain of function, but admitted it in these emails’: Rand Paul says Fauci lied to him over US-funded research that was being carried out in Wuhan lab and demands he is fired

Republican Sen. Rand Paul demanded Dr. Anthony Fauci be fired and claimed that he lied to him about gain-of-function research conducted at the Wuhan Institute of Virology that was allegedly funded by the United States.

Paul appeared on Fox News‘ The Ingraham Angle where he claimed that thousands of emails revealed by Buzzfeed News and the Washington Post proved Fauci may have been in-part responsible for the development of COVID-19.

The junior senator from Kentucky said that Fauci bears ‘moral culpability’ while asserting that COVID-19 was created by the Wuhan Institute of Virology through funding from the National Institute of Health, a theory which has not been proven.

Scientists have primarily focused their beliefs about COVID-19 on the theory that it spread naturally from a bat to an intermediary animal before infecting humans.

Claims that the virus escaped from the Wuhan Institute of Virology have been laughed off as conspiracy theories – but even researchers at a number of top universities like Harvard and Cambridge have suggested in a letter that the ‘hypotheses’ cannot be ruled out until there is more evidence.

In gain-of-function research, scientists alter organisms and diseases to study how they could become deadlier or more transmissible. The field of virology widely relies on such studies.

Fauci, who serves as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases under the umbrella of the NIH, has denied that the NIH directly funded gain-of-function research in Wuhan.

However, Paul asserted to Fox News host Laura Ingraham that the recently reveals emails show Fauci admitted to funding gain-of-function research.

‘I think we’ve had a sea change of opinion. Everybody left-of-center was saying this was a conspiracy, no way it could have happened in the Wuhan lab. Now even Dr. Fauci is saying we should investigate it,’ Paul said.

‘But the emails paint a disturbing picture, a disturbing picture of Dr. Fauci form the very beginning worrying that he had been funding gain of function research. And he knows it to this day but hasn’t admitted it.’

Paul claimed in the interview that ‘there is a lot of evidence’ that Fauci’s views on the Wuhan lab-leak theory were compromised by a ‘conflict of interest.’

‘If it turns out this virus came from the Wuhan lab, which it looks like it did, that there’s a great deal of culpability in that he was a big supporter of the funding,’ Paul said.

‘But he was also a big supporter to this day of saying that we can trust the Chinese on this, that we can trust Chinese scientists and I think that’s quite naïve and really should preclude him form the position that he’s in.’Dr. Anthony Fauci dismissed recent revelations that he was warned by scientist at start of pandemic that COVID-19 may have been 'engineered'

The NIH awarded a $3.7 million grant to EcoHealth Alliance, which is based in the United States, to study the risk of coronaviruses emerging from bats in 2014. EcoHealth Alliance in turn distributed nearly $600,000 of that funding to its collaborator, the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Paul claimed during the Fox News interview that Fauci’s emails show he was worried the NIH funded gain-of-function research as early as last February during the emergence of the pandemic.

‘In his email, in the subject line, he says ‘gain of function research.’ He was admitting it to his private underlings seven to eight months ago,’ Paul said.

In a February 1, 2020 email obtained by Buzzfeed News, Principal NIAID Director Hugh Auschincloss wrote to Fauci to discuss a paper the top infectious disease expert had sent him appearing to question if NIH grants funded gain of function research relating to coronaviruses.

In the email to Fauci, Auschincloss noted that a colleague would ‘try to determine if we have any distant ties to this work abroad.’

When Ingraham asked Paul if Fauci could face criminal culpability, he replied: ‘At the very least, there is moral culpability.’  Fauci, who is considered America's top expert on infectious disease, also explained why scientists focused their theories on the natural transmission from bats rather than an accidental leak from the Wuhan lab

Paul’s interview on Wednesday came as Fauci dismissed recent revelations that he was warned at the start of pandemic that COVID-19 may have been ‘engineered’ and said that the emails are ‘really ripe to be taken out of context.’

Fauci also admitted on The Donlon Report that he ‘can’t guarantee everything that is going on in the Wuhan lab.’

Considered America’s top expert on infectious disease, Fauci also explained why scientists focused their theories on the natural transmission from bats to humans through an intermediary species.

The interview comes after a trove of 3,200 of Fauci’s emails from January to June 2020 were obtained and published by Buzzfeed on Tuesday that showed leading virus experts warned him COVID-19 may have been created in a lab while he publicly played such claims down.

‘The only trouble is they are really ripe to be taken out of context where someone can snip out a sentence in an email without showing the other emails, and say ‘based on an email from Dr. Fauci, he said such and such’ where you don’t really have the full context,’ Fauci said in the interview.

Another trove of emails, published by the Washington Post, also revealed his cozy relationship with China’s top infectious disease expert Dr. George Gao – the director of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention – during the early days of the pandemic in March and April of last year.

‘Let’s put things in context … We’re not talking about the Chinese Communist Party. We’re not talking about the Chinese military. We’re talking about scientists that we’ve had relationships for years,’ Fauci said.

Fauci then defended his relationship with Gao, a colleague of Fauci’s ‘for many years’ and a member of the United States National Academy of Scientists.

‘The scientists there, and others that we dealt with the original SARS, with the influenza virtually every year, the scientists are experienced,’ Fauci said.

Fauci added that the Wuhan lab ‘is a very large lab to the tune of hundreds of millions, if not billions of dollars.’

‘The grant that we’re talking about was $600,000 over five years for an average of about $125,000 to $140,000 a year,’ Fauci said.

He added: ‘I can’t guarantee everything that is going on in the Wuhan lab, I can’t do that. But it is our obligation as scientists and public health individuals to study the animal-human interface’ in the aftermath of the original SARS virus in 2002.

Fauci explained that SARS-CoV-1 ‘was clearly a jumping of species from a bat, to a civic cat, to a human.’

‘So it was incumbent upon us to study the animal-human interface and to understand what potential these viruses have of infecting humans which then might damage the United States,’ Fauci said.

‘So you don’t want to go to Hoboken, New Jersey or to Fairfax, Virginia to be studying the bat human interface that might lead to an outbreak. You go to China.’
