Officers in West Yorkshire have lost their chance to get a warm glow after the force removed sunbeds from police gyms to save cash on electricity.
They were told this week that the six sunbeds – located at police gyms and social clubs across the county – were being removed to cut down on energy bills.
The tanning beds – which cost around £5,000 each – were being sold off for ‘energy management’ and health reasons.
Bosses at the West Yorkshire Police – which employs around 6,000 personnel – said the decision was taken not just to save money, but to stop any potential health issues associated with the beds.
Officers are turning a whiter shade of pale at the thought after being told their sun beds are going dark
One officer, who did not want to be named, said: ‘The bottom line is the force is trying to save money.
‘They have not bothered about sunbeds being in sports facilities in the past.
‘It is purely cost cutting – if officers want to used sunbeds they are adults and they know the health risks.’
Another officer, who said he spent 30 minutes-a-week on a sunbed as a police gym to keep his ‘perma-tan glow’, said: ‘I like having a year-round tan and have been using the sunbeds at the gym for a few years, either just after my shift or first thing in the morning.
‘To be told they are being removed to save money is rubbish, it only costs around 10p in electricity for a 30 minute session.’
The force said the cuts were not just about saving money, but also protecting officers from potential health risks
Another West Yorkshire officer said he had ‘no idea’ the sunbeds existed in police gyms, adding: ‘I’m not sure when we would have time to use the sunbeds in this day and age of cuts.
‘You barely have time to grab a sandwich, let alone lounge about on a sunbed on your lunchbreak.’
West Yorkshire Police have to find around £100million of savings between now and 2015 and are looking to save money in ‘every area;.
A force spokesman said: ‘The force is currently reviewing all aspects of energy management with a view to reduce its carbon emissions.
‘Part of this involves the removal of the six sunbeds in the sports facilities that are situated around the force area and this is being done in due course.
‘While this is an energy saving objective, it is also in line with the recommendations issued by our occupational health department.’
She added: ‘While we were analysing the energy consumption, the force consulted with occupational health and they advised that they (the sunbeds) should be removed due to the general health risk factors that come with the use of any sunbed.
‘So while removing them was part of the energy review it was also taking into consideration the risks that sunbeds pose.’
Earlier this year West Midlands Police announced that it was removing 122 ovens from its police stations, saying it aimed to save around £50,000-a-year in energy costs.
The force said officers should use microwaves to heat up their grub instead.

This country is just getting ridiculous! No wonder the police are rubbish, they are too busy getting a tan!!

Sunbeds? Clap-trap for office workers. Uniforms patrolling the streets where we want them to be have no need of such contraptions. Dear cops, if you want a healthy outdoors glow, GET OUT ON PATROL!

Brings a whole new meaning to the term “copper”, doesn’t it?

I am amazed that the police have gyms provided for their use, but I’m not surprised that they are complaining because the sun-beds have been removed. They must have been the only items used on a regular basis, because I haven’t noticed many lean, fit looking policepersons around recently.

Most of the police I see around West Yorkshire look like they’ve never seen the inside of a gym!
Especially since a large donut chain opened in Morley…
Just sayin…

Sunbed use has been linked to skin cancer, because of this no employer should condone the use of these monstrosities. In fact any that do supply them for their workers may well find themselves defending a law suite if a user contracts skin cancer.

1. I have never heard of sun beds even being in police gyms
2. Before people start on the “tax payers money” rant police gyms can only be used by officers who pay a monthly fee into the sports and social club, it’s not a Perk that all officers get free gym use, and officers certainly cannot use gyms during work hours. So don’t worry tax money isn’t paying for officers to spend work time getting a tan in the gym!

Oh the poor dears, i feel so sorry for them.

…does this mean that we’ll have more officers booking speedsters on sunny days?…
