A pet jackapoo dog suffered injuries by getting shut out of the family car and dragged along the highway by his lead.

Alf and Jan Sawkins were shocked to find that their tiny jack-a-poo Billy was missing from the car that they were driving. After numerous warnings by other motorists, they stopped to find that their poor pooch had a lucky escape.
He had been dragged along the road by the scruff of his neck after his owner momentarily opened and shut one of the car doors.

His lead was caught in the back door of the car Alf  Sawkins was commandeering.
It got released when Alf realized his dog was AWOL and slammed on the brakes; that eventually sent Billy flying across the road, ending his commuting ordeal.
The Sawkins can’t believe the trauma they caused their dog and are now fussing over Billy while they all recover.

The Mirror reports:

Distraught Alf and Jan Sawkins had put their small jack-a-poo dog Billy in the back of their car to drive to the beach for a morning stroll.

But during the journey Alf, 69, realised one of the rear doors wasn’t shut properly so pulled over and leaned over to quickly open and close it.

Without realising, Billy jumped out of the opening and got its lead trapped in the door when Alf closed it.

He then drove for more than two and a half miles with the black dog being pulled and dragged along the road, behind the car.

Several motorists tried to signal to Alf to stop and some called police .

It wasn’t until Jan looked around and saw Billy was not on the back seat it dawned on them what had happened.

Alf slammed on the brake, which forced the trapped lead to come free and sent Billy tumbling across the road.

A taxi driver rushed over and wrapped the badly injured dog in a blanket before his devastated owners reached him.

Billy had skin ripped from his legs and down one side but miraculously suffered no internal injuries or broken bones during his ordeal.
