Jakarta Police Confirms ISIS Links to Recent Bombing and Shootout

nsnbc : Police in the Indonesian capital Jakarta now confirms a link between the recent bombings and shootout in the capital Jakarta. Police moreover issued a statement about a presence of the self-proclaimed Islamic State with its “capital” in Raqqa, Syria, in both Indonesia and the Philippines.

Jakarta bombing_Jan 14_2016Jakarta Metropolitan Police Command Chief, Inspector General Tito Karnavian, told the press that the terrorists involved in the bombings and subsequent shootout in Jakarta on Tuesday were connected with ISIS (a.k.a. ISIL, Deash or Islamic State).

Inspector General Tito Karnavian added that his team is now chasing members of the network that is connected with the ISIS leadership in Raqqa, Syria. The statement came at a press conference following a meeting with Indonesian President Joko Widodo a.k.a. Jokowi.

Karnavian noted that there had been observed a change in ISIS’ strategy. While the group formerly primarily operated out of Syria and Iraq its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi (a.k.a. Al-Badri or Calip Ibrahim) has ordered ISIS to set up chapters across the world.

Karnavian did not comment on the fact that al-Baghdadi has been groomed by US and Saudi intelligence nor that prominent US politician, Senator John McCain met al-Baghdadi during a covert meeting in a safe house in Idlib, Syria, in April 2013.

Inspector General Tito Karnavian did, however, note that chapters had been established in both Indonesia, the Philippines as well as in Thailand, saying:

“The chapters can be found in France, Europe, North Africa, Turkey, as well as Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and others”.

He added that there especially in Southeast Asia is one figure who plans to set up a “Khatibah Nusantara” and he wants to be the leader of the ISIS group in the region. Karnavian noted some internal rivalries, saying:

“Later, a rivalry for leadership developed. In the Philippines they have opened a chapter in South Philippines and now multiple persons are competing for the leadership. In connection with this, one of the ISIS figures launched these attacks. Meanwhile, we have identified the group and we are still chasing them.”

It is noteworthy that attacks in Thailand, similar to the bombing in Jakarta have been linked to the ultra nationalist Turkish Grey Wolves which according to many analysts maintains ties to NATO intelligence. With regard to the attacks in Jakarta on Tuesday, the Inspector General noted that the terrorists who launched the attack had been neutralized within 15 minutes.

More specifically, he said at the time, a team from the Metropolitan Police Command was passing by on their way to secure a demonstration at the National Monument nearby and “they stopped and after hearing the explosion got off and were attacked by gun shots and a grenade-like self-made bomb, which led to a firefight”. Police members from the police precincts around Sarinah and on the streets around it helped, but four police officers from Central Jakarta police resort suffered gunshot wounds in their legs and stomach.

So far the police has not identified the names of the alleged perpetrators. There have also been doubts about the veracity about the claims that bombs had been exploded, and especially that bombs had been exploded by militants linked to ISIS. An analysis of amateur footage of the two explosions (see image above) by an explosive expert who is consulting for nsnbc international noticed that he could not see any significant sign of blast waves from the two bombs.

He added that there seemed to be more smoke than anything else. “It looked very much like smoke bombs or crudely made, nitrate-based explosives” he said.

Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Rizal Ramli assessed the situation, saying that rising poverty could partly be the reason for the growth of radicalism in the Indonesian society. Ramli stressed that: “Therefore, all of us, including the government, must work hard to eradicate poverty, so that the disparity in social welfare among our people can be drastically reduced”.
