The United States has convicted six current and former Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies of abuse and misconduct in the country’s largest detention centers.
The sheriff’s deputies, including two high-ranking lieutenants, will spend from 21 to 41 months in prison in what appears to be the latest scandal pertaining to civil rights violations and corruption in a sheriff’s department.
Acting US Attorney Stephanie Yonekura issued a statement on Tuesday, saying, “In their corrupt attempt to shield the Sheriff’s Department from scrutiny, these deputies brought scandal and shame to themselves and their department.”
Yonekura also said that the deputies planned to stonewall a federal investigation. “These deputies decided to impede a federal investigation, and in doing so they threw away their careers and their freedom.”
In addition, US District Judge Percy Anderson said the criminals were in complete obedience to a corrupt conduct.
Anderson also said they failed to fulfill their pledge that is to protect and serve the community, adding none of them showed any sign of “remorse”.
The deputies hid an FBI informant within the jail system after they found out the truth about the inmate. Later, they tried to dissuade witnesses from cooperating with the federal investigators and even asked a court to make the FBI reveal information about its investigation.
Among other charges is the attempt made by two of the deputies to intimidate a federal agent at her home and to mislead her by saying they were seeking an arrest warrant.
