People waiting outside Sydney’s Silverwater jail wept and waved as convicted wife murderer Andrew Kalajzich walked free after spending more than 25 years behind bars.
An elderly man and woman and a young boy, believed to be family members, waved to Kalajzich as he exited a door from Silverwater Correctional Complex about 11am (AEDT) on Wednesday.
They avoided a large media pack after Kalajzich, dressed in a dark blue suit and light blue business shirt, got into a vehicle with two corrective services officers and was driven away.
However, when asked if Kalajzich still maintained his innocence, the woman stopped and replied: “That’s just silly”.
It is understood that Kalajzich is heading for a family member’s home in Manly where he will live as part of his strict parole conditions.
Kalajzich waved back before he got in the vehicle and tipped his finger but declined an invitation from media to comment about his release.
Kalajzich has maintained his innocence since his wife’s death and is believed to have spent all of his fortune attempting to clear his name.
His release comes after the NSW State Parole Authority granted him parole last month.
Kalajzich was jailed in 1988 after being convicted of hiring a hitman to shoot his wife twice in the head as she lay in bed in their northern beaches home on January 27, 1986.
He was found guilty of three charges including murder, conspiring to murder and attempting to discharge a loaded firearm with intent to murder.
Kalajzich will be closely supervised while on parole and monitored by Corrective Services NSW.
