Kandahar blast kills Afghan worker

A roadside explosion in Afghanistan’s southern city of Kandahar has killed a local municipal worker.

“A bomb placed on a vase in Kandahar city exploded at 11:30 a.m. local time today (Sunday), leaving one person dead,” said Perviz Najib, a local Afghan government spokesman.

The victim was identified as a gardener with Kandahar Municipality, where the blast was carried out while he was watering plants in a vase along the Mirwais Meena road of the city.

Other local press reports indicate that the fatal blast was caused by an improvised explosive device (IED), raising questions on whether it was a remnant of earlier bombing efforts or a new one.

Kandahar Province is considered among the more restive provinces in southern Afghanistan, where Taliban and other al-Qaeda-inspired militants are actively operating against local Afghan government targets as well as US-led foreign troops.

Taliban militants have frequently used improvised explosive devices to target Afghan and foreign forces. The assaults often lead to civilian casualties.

No group has claimed responsibility for the deadly blast of Sunday.

Improvised explosive devices, including roadside bombs, are by far the most lethal weapons Taliban militants use against Afghan forces, foreign troops, and civilians.

Afghan troops have recently launched a major security operation against the Taliban militants in various regions of the war-ravaged country.
